Fees & Disclosures

At Mavericks Community Foundation, we value transparency in giving and that's why we provide disclosures about donations made via Coastside Gives in accordance with applicable California state laws.

Fee Transparency

As part of this, we don't hide the processing fees for donations, why we invite donors to add a little extra to their gifts to help offset the cost of these fees, and why we share more about exactly why this fee is necessary.

In order to offer and sustain Coastside Gives, a transaction fee of 6.5% is charged on every donation made through the event. To make your giving as convenient and impactful as possible, our team at the Mavericks Community Foundation has ensured this fee is as low as our direct costs. The fee is comprised of the following components for all online donations:

  • Technology & Platform: A 3.0% fee is assessed for technology and platform costs. This helps cover the cost of licensing and maintenance this secure technology platform, making it possible for donors to discover and support multiple organizations in one simple transaction.
  • Processing: A 2.9% + $0.30 fee is assessed to cover the per-transaction processing costs for any credit card, Venmo, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • Management & Sustainability: A 0.6% is assessed to help cover the cost of managing and sustaining Coastside Gives every year.

When you make a donation on Coastside Gives, you can elect to help cover the fee. During our last giving event, 83% of donors helped cover the fee for the nonprofit(s) they supported. We thank them for their generosity!

Disclosures

In accordance with applicable laws, through our licensing of the Mightcause platform to host Coastside Gives, the Mightcause Foundation will process your donations on behalf of your selected nonprofit(s). The Mightycause Foundation will process the donations and the platform will automatically disburse the funds to your selected nonprofit(s). The Mightcause Foundation has exclusive legal control over the contributed assets and is fully committed to carrying out the purpose of your donation. The Mightycause Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity and contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Its Tax-ID is 27-2499903.

The selected charity may not receive a grant funded by your contribution if it is no longer recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization, has had its California tax-exempt status revoked by the Franchise Tax Board, or is no longer in good standing with the California Registry of Charities and Fundraisers. If it continues to qualify to receive a grant, the grant will be made no later than 30 days after the end of the month of your contribution to allow us time to process the grant.

Why is a fee charged?

No fundraising effort is free, unfortunately, which is why we provide transparency around fees and give donors the option to offset them. The fee makes it possible to provide this website — a secure and convenient way for for local donors and nonprofits to engage — and Mavericks Community Foundation for Coastside Gives.

The portion of the fee retained by the Mavericks Community Foundation is invested directly back into local nonprofits:

  • Expanding the way we grow giving through our philanthropy initiative, including managing the year-round effort to coordinate Coastside Gives.
  • Providing programs and resources to assist area organizations as they enhance their work, collaborate with each other, and strengthen the impact of the entire sector in our community.

How does offsetting the fee work?

If you choose to offset the fee, your donation will increase by the amount of the fee, which is dependent on your payment method. For example, if you make a $100 credit card gift and opt to offset the 6.5% + $0.30 fee, your total donation will be $106.80.

Note that your entire contribution amount is tax-deductible, including the fee.
