Joey’s dream of living at Big Wave started 23 years ago when participating in Special Olympics Basketball. From idea to construction took over 20 years of collaboration and perseverance from parents and the community. Joey even testified at county planning meetings in support of the project. Now that both of his parents have passed, living at Big Wave is an essential lifeline. His favorite thing about Big Wave is the Farm. He volunteers several times a week, helping care for chickens, and learning how to plant, nurture, and harvest crops. For the first time last year the farm program cultivated “super” pumpkins, and entered this one in the HMB Weigh-Off. it weighed 80 pounds. Being on the farm gives Joey a sense of belonging, and provides opportunity to socialize with his peers and future Big Wave residents.
Big Wave will be so much more than just housing – it will be a center and a “hub” for adults with special needs from all over the Bay Area to learn, grow, and build friendships. This project wouldn’t be possible without the support of friends and family and the greater community. We appreciate any donations given with heartfelt gratitude. Big Wave is a 501©(3) nonprofit organization, with the mission of providing access to opportunities, lifelong housing, and a sense of community for Bay Area adults with special needs.
