Help Us Build a Lifelong Community for Adults with Special Needs

As many of you know, my son Axel is 20 and preparing for an exciting next chapter: moving into a lifelong supportive community designed just for adults like him. It’s called Big Wave, and it’s now being built in Half Moon Bay.

Big Wave is more than housing. It’s a place where adults with disabilities from across the Bay Area can live with purpose, dignity, and joy. The campus will include supported apartments, outdoor gathering spaces, and day programs focused on continuing education, job training, and friendship.

It will also feature a one-of-a-kind Culinary Academy, run by One Step Beyond, a nonprofit known for its innovative work helping adults with intellectual disabilities develop real-world job skills through food and hospitality training. Residents will learn to cook, build confidence, and share meals with friends and community members.

While Axel’s membership is already secured, I’m now raising funds to support the Big Wave Project itself, because this community will benefit so many other families like ours.

We’re hoping to raise $5,000 this year to help bring key parts of the Big Wave campus to life, including:

1. The Culinary Academy and training kitchen, where residents will gain valuable life and job skills
2. An outdoor courtyard and event space for celebrations, classes, and community events
3. Several needs-based affordable housing units for adults with limited resources

Construction is underway, but much work remains—and this dream only becomes reality with the support of generous friends, family, and community members.
